A Colorful Vision in Cheraw

During the 2021-22 school year, Cheraw Intermediate School used funds from a SC ABC Arts Grant to start a stained-glass art project.  What started out as a 5 day project grew into a large mural that took until November of 2023 to complete.

Greenville, SC artists, John and Karoline O'Rourke facilitated our students to cut and help create rectangular and squares of stained-glass.  The O'Rourkes took the work the students had done back to their studio in Greenville, prepared the pieces and fired them.  Through their tireless effort, Mr. and Mrs. O'Rourke repeatedly came back to CIS to complete the 12 by 15 foot stained-glass mural.  This gigantic piece of art that represents the many aspects of South Carolina took 500 pounds of glass.

The completed mural now stands in the lobby of Cheraw Intermediate School.  The last part of the instillation will be backlighting this masterpiece so that it can be seen from outside, even at night.  Thanks to the planning of Mr. Eddins,Mrs. Rogers and the ABC Arts Committee, the enormous efforts of the O'Rourkes and our students, there is now a beautiful vision to be seen as you enter Cheraw Intermediate School!
