A Message from Principal Scott Eddins

I value knowledge and learning. My philosophy is that school should be fun; therefore, learning should be fun! So I believe if students enjoy school and want to come, then they will learn more. Robert Hutchins said, "The purpose of education is not to fill the minds of studens with facts...it is to teach them to think...and always to think for themselves." Therefore, it is my responsibility to create a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment for children to learn.

Cheraw Intermediate School has an extraordinary staff of caring, dedicated teachers. All core teachers are fully certified and considered highly qualified. Six teachers have achieved National Board certification. All the teachers work diligently to inspire our students to always do their best. The PASS test is the tool used to assess our school's performance. Based on the 2012/2013 PASS results, our ESEA School Report rating is an "A" (93.6).

CIS is an Arts in Basic Curriculum site. The goal of our arts strategic plan is to enhance student achievement by utilizing arts integration activities to promote engagement, motivation, creative thinking, and problem-solving. Through arts integration our students participate in arts-related educational field trips, create and display art work in the art gallery, and perform in plays, chorus, and dance. Two events of special interest last year were The Follies and the musical, The Peter Pan. Our students love the extra art opportunities available to them.

CIS also encourages character development by recognizing students who demonstrated good citizenship. The students participate in mock elections and vote for local, state, and national candidates. They also vote for student representatives to form a student government. Our students conduct service projects like assisting with school beautification and Red Ribbon Week activities. They also participate in raising money to support various charities; the students raised nearly $4,000 to support Relay for Life and the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital last year.

As we celebrate our accomplishments, we acknowledge the dedication and contributions of our staff, parents, community members, and business partners and look forward to continued success in the 2013 / 2014 school year.
