Cheraw Intermediate Welcomes Resource Officer

Today was officially the first day for our resource officer, Damien Shields. He is housed at Long Middle but will patrol CIS and the Primary. He will spend approximately an hour to an hour and a half with us each day. I have asked him to patrol the campus, look for possible safety concerns, and most importantly, spend time with our children. I want him to get to know them and build a relationship with them. I also want him to work with them – maybe similar to the D.A.R.E. program - through guidance classes. These are some initial plans for his service with us.

I have known Mr. Shields for a long time. (He was an officer with Cheraw Police Department for many years.) I respect him and think he will do an awesome job as the resource officer. When I met with him today, he seemed excited about the new position and was ready to get started.

He has a personal interest in the safety of our school since his daughter in Mrs. Oldland’s homeroom.

I am not sure when he will come to the school tomorrow, but I plan to orient him to the building and introduce him to all staff and classrooms. Please welcome him to CIS.
